Boy Asleep in Chair Anime Drawing

Anya Forger (アーニャ・フォージャー , Ānya Fōjā ? ) is the deuteragonist of the SPY x FAMILY series. Formerly known as Test Subject "007" (被験体"007" , Hikentai "007" ? ), she is a telepath whose abilities were created in an experiment conducted by an unknown organization.

She is a student in Cecile Hall at Eden Academy and the adopted daughter of Loid Forger and Yor Forger.

Appearance

Anya is a short young girl with fair skin and green eyes. Loid describes her as appearing about four to five years old at the oldest.[8] Her green eyes are large and oval-shaped with prominent eyelashes. She has shoulder-length, light pink hair that curls inwards with a fringe that reaches just above her eyes. Anya is noticeably shorter than most of her peers and many of the insults Damian and his friends direct at her target her small size.

When Loid met Anya for the first time in the orphanage: she wore a simple black dress with a white ribbon at the front, along with white folded-down socks and black shoes. She also wears two black hair ornaments with bright yellow embellishments that resemble small horns on the sides of her head. Anya is never seen with her hair ornaments off, even wearing them to sleep.

At Eden Academy, Anya wears the standard uniform with white knee-high socks and black Mary Janes. She carries around a brown schoolbag with a sheep keychain attached. During physical education class, Anya also ties her hair back with a red headband and wears the school gym uniform, along with white socks and white gym shoes.

When she was younger, her hair was slightly shorter and she did not wear the horn-like hair ornaments, instead, her hair was tied into small buns at the sides of her head. She also wore clothing that resembled scrubs.[8]

Personality

As a young child, Anya is very impressionable towards the people around her. For instance, reading Loid's mind and acting in ways he found very odd and learning how to punch from Yor. Given her telepathic ability ostracizing her from people and her many foster homes, she instantly took to "Twilight" for being a real spy. Since being adopted, she wanted to go wherever Loid was going in hopes of seeing the spy stuff she always sees on TV. But, after the events of Chapter 1, she has learned of the harshness of espionage and stopped messing with Loid's spy work. She is quite clever being able to spell long words by herself and helping Loid out as best she can, even nudging Loid and Yor together. She likes watching spy cartoons, her favorite being "Spy Wars", and is often seen watching them whenever she can.

Anya has been longing for a loving family, as her previous families have most likely abandoned her. This has left her with some abandonment issues, as she cried at the thought of Loid replacing her and asking him not to leave her behind. This is further proven by how she lied about her age so she can be adopted by Loid so he can do his mission.

From her time as an experiment subject, Anya has a fear of people knowing she is a telepath. Resulting in her gaining deep mental scars at a very young age.

Due to being raised as an experiment subject, Anya does not have very good social skills and cannot have normal communication with people, she has also shown a severe lack of situational awareness & common sense at times. Because of this, she tends to be completely honest, always saying and reacting people's inner thoughts which usually leads her to initiate involuntary conflicts with others. Nevertheless, Anya possesses a kind and emphatic side, proven when she calmed down a cow after learning through his telepathy that it was scared.

Being adopted by Loid and forming a family with him and Yor has made Anya feel genuinely happy. Due to finally being able to have that innocent and peaceful life she's always wanted to have but it was taken away from her.

History

Anya's past

Anya's true origins, as well as the source of her telepathic abilities, are largely unclear. Prior to being found at the orphanage, she was made by accident, as an unintended consequence of research experiments conducted by an unknown organization. She had the code name 'Test Subject "007"' and was treated very strictly by the scientists, not being allowed to play and forced to learn how to use her powers, seemingly for the sake of world peace.[8]

She later escaped the research facility and moved from institution to institution, seeking someone to take care of her.[9] Several of the scientists seen in her memories are also seen during Bond's time as a Project Apple subject, suggesting a connection between them.[10]

During the year before she met Loid, Anya had been fostered out and returned four times, and was transferred out of two other orphanages. During this, she went under various different surnames and eventually ended up at the orphanage where she is adopted by Loid. Franky later discovers that she has no birth records. Thus, having no known age or birth parents.[8]

While little is known about Anya's biological parents, when Murdoch forced Anya to compare her to Yor, Anya is left utterly speechless and brought to tears as she recalls her mother. This suggest that she had a profound impact on her daughter before her disappearance, Loid speculates that since Anya ended up in an orphanage, the situation must not have ended well.

She is always seen holding a chimera doll, later nicknamed "Director Chimera" in her spy roleplay.[11] She may also have memories of her mother or a mother figure as she reacts with tears when Murdoch Swan tries to provoke Yor Forger by comparing her and Anya's original mother.[12]

According to Loid's falsified background, Anya's biological mother passed away two years ago and Loid has been raising her as a single father since. Her mother's dying wish was for her to attend a good school.[13]

Abilities and Skills

Anya attempts to read Loid's mind

Telepathy: Anya is capable of reading the minds of other people and animals, her ability depicted as small sparks around her head. However, she is sensitive to being in large crowds as she becomes overwhelmed and dizzy by too many thoughts, to the point of getting a nosebleed. Anya finds it difficult to understand complicated minds, such as Loid's.[14] She must also be within a certain distance of her target to read minds.[15]

Classical Language: Anya is mysteriously knowledgeable of classical language, despite having barely learned the subject at school, as Loid notices she could have scored well on her test if she did not have so many spelling mistakes.[16]

Resourcefulness: She is shown on numerous occasions to have a decent level of street smarts, saving Loid from potential death using her resourcefulness and quick thinking skills. She is also capable enough to make a makeshift bomb albeit with the knowledge of an aspiring assassin managed to make a peanut bomb.

Basic Self-Defense: Anya has been taught by Yor some early basic self-defense. She is strong enough to send Damian flying several feet with a punch to the face.

Above Average Strength: Anya is capable of sending people flying with a punch, if angered.

Weaknesses

Anya's Eclipsing

Eclipsing: In a phenomenon dubbed "Eclipsing" by the scientists at Anya's former laboratory,[17] Anya's telepathic abilities are temporarily disabled during the new moon.

General Skill: Anya is shown to be poor in a variety of skills including studying, drawing, sports, and music. She often obtains single-digit scores for her tests and resorts to her telepathic abilities to get through classes and exams instead, refusing to study unless under Loid's strict supervision and during her "Eclipsing". Even when motivated to study during her midterm exams, she just barely passes. She tries to play a child-sized violin Loid buys her but causes the strings to snap with her bad playing.

Poor Academics: Anya has low to sub-par abilities when it comes to academics, notably scoring very low in most of the tests she has taken at Eden Academy. She seems to have an over-reliance on her telepathy skills, especially when troubled, primarily using it to answer homework questions and cheat on tests. Her poor academics can be partially attributed to the advanced material she is studying, paired with her likely being younger than she claims to be.

Lack of control power: Anya is unable to control her telepathy, which often leads Anya to unwillingly read every single thought of everyone around her. This often makes her feel overwhelmed, causing her to get dizzy and tired, and in extreme cases, have headaches, a bloody nose, and even pass out.

Lack of Athletic Ability: Befitting her age, Anya is extremely poor when it comes to physical exercises, getting winded easily, having poor coordination and low strength, being unable to serve a ball properly despite Yor's training and her putting her full strength into it. This lack of ability has extended to various sports including tennis, jump rope, swimming and vaulting.

Relationships

Loid Forger

Anya initially wishes to follow Loid out of curiosity and admiration for his secret identity as a spy. After Loid rescues her from her kidnappers, she becomes increasingly attached to Loid as a father figure and chooses to remain with him despite being given an offer to go to a better orphanage. Loid also views her as a replaceable tool for his mission at first, though he later comes to genuinely care for her. She hides her telepathic abilities from Loid because she is afraid of being abandoned by him.

Anya deeply cares for her adoptive father, as she considers him as one of her favorite things and becomes greatly attached to the stuffed penguin he won for her as a gift during their aquarium trip. When Bond rips it up, Anya is more upset due to the fact it was a gift from Loid and does not want a new one.[18] Despite her mind-reading powers, Anya still feels insecure about whether Loid likes her or not, as his mind is too complicated for her to understand his feelings.[14]

Yor Forger

Yor Forger is the adoptive mother of Anya, who addresses her as "Mama" immediately after she moves in. Anya manipulates Yor and Loid together upon discovering Yor's identity as an assassin and being interested in the concept of spies and assassins. When they do initially get along and even hold hands, Anya becomes shocked when Yor is reminded of her brother's accidental injury caused by her hugging him too hard, dashing away from Yor. Yor tries her best to be a better mother for Anya after the admissions interview despite knowing its a fake family, by trying to improve her cooking. When Yor is discouraged by her failure, Anya comforts her and admires her strength, getting Yor to train her. Although Anya is fond of Yor, Anya is often blunt towards Yor's flaws, particularly her bad cooking, and often hurts her feelings visibly. Lacking many of her husband's emotional barriers and having raised her younger brother, Yor is more often openly affectionate towards Anya than Loid is.

Yuri Briar

Anya first meets Yuri in person when Yor calls him over to tutor Anya for her midterm exams. Neither of them have a good impression of the other due to Yuri's dislike of Loid and his child, while Anya gets creeped out from Yuri's overly obsessive thoughts about his sister. Using Yuri's love for Yor, Anya is able to persuade him into tutoring her seriously and he eventually shares his motivation for studying when he was younger. Although Yuri later stomps off in frustration when she fails to learn anything, his story allows Anya to reflect on the recent bombing incident and how she could have better helped Loid if she were more knowledgeable.[17]

Bond Forger

Anya encounters Bond while at an adoption fair where they make eye contact through a window, allowing Anya to discover his precognition abilities. Through teamwork, they are able to avert a future where Loid dies in a bombing incident and Anya persuades her parents to adopt Bond into the family. They are quite close as Bond's enhanced intelligence and Anya's telepathic abilities allows the two of them to communicate easily. They have an argument due to Bond's jealousy causing him to rip up her beloved stuffed penguin, though they eventually reconcile.[18]

Henry Henderson

Henderson is Anya's housemaster at Eden Academy, whom she met during the interview process. In somewhat of a running gag, Henderson has a low opinion of Anya's intelligence, and will frequently look at her specifically when warning students about the consequences of poor performance.

Becky Blackbell

Becky Blackbell is Anya's first and only friend at Eden Academy. Anya initially has a bad impression of Becky when she thinks of Anya as immature and attempts to take her under her wing, causing Anya to snub her. Becky also thinks of her as pathetic when Anya doesn't stand up for herself under Damian's bullying but changes her mind when Anya returns Damian's insults with a smug smile, even being moved when Anya gets mad at Damian as an excuse for punching him. Becky often stands up for Anya whenever Damian antagonizes Anya during their time at Eden Academy. Her frank nature and intention to be Anya's friend has helped Anya's fear of people when she is isolated by her classmates. As a memory of their shopping trip and a token of their friendship, Anya buys the both of them matching sheep keychains.[19]

Damian Desmond

Anya and Damian fighting as usual

During their first meeting at the entrance ceremony, Anya is aware of him being the son of Loid's target but gets angry when he egotistically thinks that she has fallen for him, having noticed that she is staring at him. When he realizes her father is a "feelings" doctor and that she is a commoner, he treats her with contempt and insults her, but gets embarrassed when he thinks she's looking down on him with a smug smile. He begins paying attention to Anya in classes after she is the first to punch him and eventually falls for her, much to his denial. The two continue to have a love-hate relationship as his group periodically gets into fights with Anya and Becky but Damian stands up for Anya occasionally when she is insulted by their classmates and protects her during the dodgeball competition.

Franky Franklin

Franky is usually tasked with babysitting Anya whenever Loid and Yor are unavailable. He often acts as her partner in crime and goes along with her schemes, especially if it is at Loid's expense.

Fiona Frost

Due to her telepathic abilities, Anya is aware of Fiona's true personality and how she is actually madly in love with Loid. Though Anya is amused by the dissonance between Fiona's straight face and lovesick thoughts, Anya dislikes her for trying to replace Yor as her fake mother as Fiona plans on using an extremely strict and painful method for her to become an Imperial Scholar.

Trivia

  • Anya is a Russian diminutive of the name "Anna", meaning "grace".
  • Anya's name was originally Romanized as "Ania" by Tatsuya Endo, and thus, often written as such in the backgrounds of some of the earlier chapters.
    • This carries over to the anime, as evident by the sign on her bedroom door.
  • Anya's former code name 'Test Subject "007"' is a reference to the fictional character James Bond and his code number 007.
  • Anya has a childish manner of speaking by frequently mispronouncing words. In Japanese, this is expressed through her using hiragana in speech instead of kanji.
    • As further proof of this, she refers to Loid and Yor as "chi-chi" and "ha-ha", even when addressing them, which is an incorrect use of the terms.
  • Anya's favorite things include her chimera doll, peanuts, spy cartoons, silenced pistols, bombs, castles, penguins, her uniform, Loid, Yor, and Becky.[20]
  • Anya likes the extra toys that come with some candy brands and attempts to use her telepathy to read the content of the box to obtain her desired toy.[21]
  • As Loid stated, Anya is quite picky about her food.[12] Some of the food she likes including peanuts (her favorite)[22], cake[23] and hamburg steak[16]. She hates carrots.[22]
  • Anya barely passed the written exam of the admissions process with a score of 31.[24] She is bad at most of her subjects, and resort to use her power to get the answers sometimes. But she has talent in Classical Language (equivalent to Latin language in the real world) and score 41 in the test by herself.[25] [26]
  • It is quite possible that Anya is four years old instead of six as she only proclaimed she was six after reading Loid's mind & discovering he needed a six year old. Loid himself assumed she was four.
    • If she is four instead of six it might explain her academic difficulty.
  • Anya was initially planned to be older and taller, as seen in an initial sketch of the family. Her expression also appears to be much more serious or aloof.[27]
    • Anya's design is adapted from Ashe, a character in Tatsuya Endo's previous one-shot Rengoku no Ashe.
  • Anya is the first of her grade to receive a Tonitrus Bolt[28]; she is also the first to be awarded a Stella Star[29].
  • Anya's chair, featured on the cover of the second volume, is a Marshmallow sofa designed by Irving Harper of George Nelson Associates.[30]

Quotes

  • (To herself, regarding Loid and her powers) "I have to hide my power too. If he finds out I can read minds... I'll have to run away." [8]
  • (To herself, thinking about Loid): "Papa is the world biggest liar. But… he's the coolest liar!" [8]
